My First Budget in Seoul: The Number Shock
When I arrived in Seoul 12 years ago, I had no idea what my daily life would cost. My first 월세 (wolse — monthly rent) seemed astronomical, until I compared it with Paris. Today, after a decade here, I can give you a realistic budget for 2026 — with the actual prices I pay every month.
South Korea has seen moderate inflation in recent years, but Seoul remains overall cheaper than Paris for day-to-day life. However, housing in central neighborhoods can rival the French capital. Here''s the breakdown.
월세 (wolse) — Rent: The Most Variable Expense
월세 (wolse) means monthly rent in Korea. It''s different from 전세 (jeonse) — the deposit-without-rent system — which I won''t detail here as it mainly concerns Koreans with significant capital.
원룸 (wonrum) — Korean Studio
The 원룸 (wonrum) is the typical studio: one main room with kitchenette and integrated bathroom. In 2026, prices vary enormously by area:
- Popular neighborhoods (Hongdae, Sinchon, Itaewon): 500,000 to 800,000₩/month (~$350-560) for a decent 원룸
- Gangnam, Yeoksam, Seocho: 800,000 to 1,200,000₩/month (~$560-840) — business districts
- Accessible suburbs (Bundang, Suwon, Anyang): 400,000 to 600,000₩/month (~$280-420)
For comparison: a studio in central Paris easily costs $1,000-1,400. In Seoul, for the same budget, you get a larger 원룸, often better equipped (AC, floor heating).
보증금 (bojeunggeum) — Security Deposit
Note: In Korea, you almost always pay a 보증금 (bojeunggeum — security deposit) in addition to rent. It can range from 1 to 10 million won ($700 to $7,000) depending on the place. This deposit is returned at the end of your lease — keep your contract safe!
식비 (sikbi) — Food: Where You Save
This is where Seoul beats Paris hands down. 식비 (sikbi — food budget) is significantly lower if you eat local.
Cooking at Home
- Traditional market (시장 — sijang): vegetables, meat, fruit 30-50% cheaper than supermarkets
- 대형마트 (daehyeong mateu — hypermarket): Emart, Lotte Mart, Homeplus — prices comparable to the West for imports, cheaper for local products
- Grocery budget: 150,000 to 250,000₩/month for one person who cooks
Eating Out
- 한식당 (hansikdang — Korean restaurant): 8,000 to 15,000₩ per meal ($5-10) — bibimbap, 김치찌개 (kimchi jjigae), 불고기 (bulgogi)
- 편의점 (pyeonuijeom — convenience store): 3,000 to 5,000₩ for lunch (triangle kimbap, gimbap)
- 카페 (kape — café): 5,000 to 7,000₩ for a coffee ($3.50-5) — more expensive than before but still less than Paris
- Restaurant budget: 300,000 to 500,000₩/month if you mix cooking and eating out
My tip: 배달 (baedal — delivery) is king in Korea. Apps 배민 (Baemin) and 요기요 (Yogiyo) deliver in 30 minutes for 1,000-2,000₩ in fees. A full meal for 10,000₩ delivered to your door — unthinkable in Paris.
교통비 (gyotongbi) — Transport: The Subway Reigns
교통비 (gyotongbi — transport budget) is one of the most predictable expenses. Seoul''s subway is excellent, clean, and punctual.
티머니 카드 (T-money kadeu) — Transport Card
The 티머니 카드 (T-money card) is the rechargeable card for subway, bus, and taxi. In 2026:
- Subway ride: 1,400₩ (base) + 100-300₩ by distance — about $1 per trip
- Bus: 1,300₩ in the city
- Monthly budget: 60,000 to 80,000₩ for someone who commutes daily
Comparison: a Paris metro pass costs about $95/month (~130,000₩). In Seoul, for 70,000₩ you get unlimited rides in your zone.
택시 (taeksi) — Taxi
택시 (taeksi) are affordable: 3,800₩ flag fall, then 100₩ every 132 meters. A 30-minute ride in the city: 15,000-20,000₩ ($10-14). In Paris, the same trip would cost $25-35.
통신비 (tongsinbi) — Phone and Internet
통신비 (tongsinbi — communication fees) is reasonable:
- Mobile plan: 30,000 to 50,000₩/month ($20-35) — unlimited or 100GB data, unlimited calls
- Fiber internet: often included in rent, otherwise 30,000 to 40,000₩/month
- Mobile + internet combo: 50,000 to 70,000₩ with SK, KT, or LG U+
5G is widespread. Plans offer better value than in most Western countries for data.
건강보험 (geongang boheom) — Health Insurance
건강보험 (geongang boheom — health insurance) is mandatory for residents. If you work in Korea, it''s deducted from your salary (about 3-5% of income). For an average salary, budget 80,000 to 120,000₩/month.
Students and working holiday visa holders have specific options. Consultations and medication remain very affordable: a doctor visit 5,000-15,000₩, antibiotics 3,000-5,000₩.
유틸리티 (yutilitei) — Electricity, Gas, Water
유틸리티 (utilities) varies by season. Floor heating (온돌 — ondol) in winter can spike the bill:
- Summer (AC): 80,000 to 120,000₩/month
- Winter (heating): 100,000 to 180,000₩/month
- Spring/fall: 50,000 to 80,000₩/month
- Annual average: 100,000 to 150,000₩/month
Water is generally cheap (20,000-30,000₩). Gas is often included in electricity for many apartments.
여가 (yeoga) — Leisure and Going Out
여가 (yeoga — leisure) depends entirely on your lifestyle:
- 노래방 (noraebang — karaoke): 15,000-25,000₩/hour for a small room
- 영화 (yeonghwa — cinema): 14,000₩ per ticket
- 술자리 (suljari — drinking night): 30,000-50,000₩ per person (soju, beer, 안주)
- Concert, show: 50,000-150,000₩ depending on the artist
- Realistic leisure budget: 200,000 to 300,000₩/month
Summary Table: Monthly Budget by Category

| Leisure | 여가 | 200,000 - 300,000 | 140 - 210 |
Three Budget Types for 2026
Student / Working Holiday Budget: 1,200,000₩/month ($840)
- 월세: 500,000₩ (원룸 shared or suburb)
- 식비: 300,000₩ (cooking + cheap eats)
- 교통비: 60,000₩
- 통신비: 35,000₩
- 건강보험: included (travel or student insurance)
- 유틸리티: 80,000₩ (shared)
- 여가: 200,000₩
It''s tight but livable. I lived on this budget during my working holiday in 2014 — prices have risen a bit since, but the structure remains the same.
Single Professional Budget: 2,000,000₩/month ($1,400)
- 월세: 800,000₩ (decent 원룸 in the city)
- 식비: 400,000₩
- 교통비: 70,000₩
- 통신비: 45,000₩
- 건강보험: 100,000₩
- 유틸리티: 120,000₩
- 여가: 300,000₩
- Misc: 165,000₩
This is my current budget. I live comfortably, go out 2-3 times a week, travel in Korea one weekend a month.
Couple Budget: 3,000,000₩/month ($2,100)
- 월세: 1,200,000₩ (두룸 — durum, two-room apartment)
- 식비: 700,000₩ (cooking + restaurants)
- 교통비: 120,000₩ (2 people)
- 통신비: 80,000₩ (2 plans)
- 건강보험: 180,000₩ (2 people)
- 유틸리티: 150,000₩
- 여가: 400,000₩
- Misc: 170,000₩
A couple can live very well in Seoul for less than a single person in Paris.
Seoul vs Paris: Where Do You Save?
| Category | Seoul | Paris | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent (studio) | 500-800$ | 900-1,200$ | Seoul |
| Groceries | 200-300$ | 300-400$ | Seoul |
| Transport | 50$ | 95$ | Seoul |
| Lunch out | 8$ | 15$ | Seoul |
| Coffee | 4$ | 5$ | Seoul |
| Cinema | 10$ | 12$ | Seoul |
The only category where Paris can be cheaper: imported products (cheese, wine, charcuterie). If you need your brie and saucisson, expect to pay double.

My Advice After 12 Years of Budgeting in Seoul
Keep your 월세 within 40% of your net salary. The rest of the budget adjusts more easily. And learn to cook a few Korean dishes — ingredients are cheap and you''ll save a lot on 식비.
Life in Seoul can be very affordable if you adopt local habits. And to communicate with your landlord, negotiate at the 시장, or order 배달 — Korean changes everything.
