Opening a Bank Account in Korea — Step-by-Step Guide

Opening a Bank Account in Korea: The Obstacle Course (That's Worth It)

When I arrived in Korea 12 years ago, opening a bank account was one of my first tasks — and one of the most stressful. I found myself in a 하나은행 (Hana Bank) branch with my passport, zero Korean skills, and a form I couldn't even read.

Today, things have improved considerably. Several banks offer English services, and Korean banking apps are among the best in the world. Here's everything you need to know.

Why Open a Korean Account?

The Cashless Society

South Korea is one of the most cashless societies in the world. Virtually everything is paid by card or mobile app:

  • 교통카드 (gyotong kadeu) — Transport card (subway, bus)
  • 카카오페이 (KakaoPay) — Mobile payment via KakaoTalk
  • 삼성페이 (Samsung Pay) — Payment via Samsung smartphone
  • 네이버페이 (Naver Pay) — Payment via Naver

Without a Korean bank account, you can't:

  • Get a Korean phone number (post-paid)
  • Receive your salary
  • Rent an apartment (the 보증금 — deposit — is done by transfer)
  • Use most Korean apps
  • Shop online on Korean websites

Required Documents

For Residents (Work Visa, Student, etc.)

DocumentKoreanRequired?
Passport여권 (yeogwon)✅ Yes
Alien Registration Card (ARC)외국인등록증 (oegugin deungnokcheung)✅ Yes
Proof of address거주지 증명서 (geojuji jeungmyeongseo)Sometimes
Employment contract근로계약서 (geunno gyeyakseo)Sometimes

The 외국인등록증 (ARC — Alien Registration Card) is the most important document. It's your ID in Korea. Without it, opening an account is nearly impossible at traditional banks.

For Tourists and WHV Without ARC

It's harder but not impossible. Some banks accept account openings with just a passport and valid visa. 우리은행 (Woori Bank) is known for being the most accommodating with foreigners without an ARC.

Best Banks for Foreigners

하나은행 (Hana Bank)

This is my top recommendation. Hana Bank has the best service for foreigners:

  • App available in English
  • Often English-speaking staff at major branches
  • Good exchange rates
  • Partnerships with many international companies

신한은행 (Shinhan Bank)

Shinhan is the most technologically innovative bank:

  • Well-designed 쏠 (SOL) app
  • English customer service by phone
  • Branches with English-language kiosks
  • Good international coverage

우리은행 (Woori Bank)

Woori is often the easiest for initial opening:

  • Sometimes accepts foreigners without ARC
  • Specialized branches for foreigners in international neighborhoods (Itaewon, Hongdae)
  • Solid basic service

국민은행 (KB Kookmin Bank)

The largest Korean bank by number of branches:

  • KB Star Banking app in English
  • Ubiquitous — you'll find a KB ATM everywhere
  • Great for daily use

The Opening Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Choose Your Branch

Preferably go to a branch in an international neighborhood. Itaewon, Gangnam, Hongdae, or near universities often have English-speaking staff.

Step 2: Take a Number

Upon entering, take a ticket from the machine (번호표 — beonhopyo). Wait your turn.

Step 3: Fill Out the Form

You'll need to fill out a 계좌개설 신청서 (gyejwa gaeseol sincheong-seo — account opening form). Required information:

  • 이름 (ireum) — Name
  • 여권번호 (yeogwon beonho) — Passport number
  • 외국인등록번호 (oegugin deungnok beonho) — ARC number
  • 전화번호 (jeonhwa beonho) — Phone number
  • 주소 (juso) — Address

Step 4: Identity Verification

The clerk will verify your documents and take your photo. Some banks also require fingerprint verification.

Step 5: Receive Your 통장 (Tongjang)

The 통장 (tongjang) is the Korean bankbook — a small booklet you can update at ATMs to see your transactions. It's a very Korean item that's gradually disappearing in favor of apps, but remains symbolic.

Step 6: Activate Your Card and App

You'll receive a debit card (체크카드 — chekeu kadeu) and need to download the banking app. Activation requires your ARC and a Korean phone number.

Banking Apps: The Mobile Revolution

토스 (Toss)

토스 (Toss) isn't a bank, but a financial super-app used by over 20 million Koreans. It allows you to:

  • Transfer money for free
  • Manage multiple bank accounts
  • Pay in stores
  • Invest in stocks
  • Manage insurance

It's the app I use most daily. The interface is intuitive and increasingly available in English.

카카오뱅크 (Kakao Bank)

KakaoTalk's 100% online bank. Account opening is done entirely on mobile but requires an ARC. Benefits:

  • No account maintenance fees
  • Free transfers
  • Competitive interest rates
  • Interface integrated with KakaoTalk

Useful Phrases at the Bank

  • 계좌를 만들고 싶어요 (gyejwareul mandeulgo sipeoyo) — "I'd like to open an account"
  • 외국인인데 계좌 개설 가능한가요? (oegugininende gyejwa gaeseol ganeunghangayo?) — "I'm a foreigner, can I open an account?"
  • 체크카드 발급 해 주세요 (chekeu kadeu balgup hae juseyo) — "I'd like to get a debit card"
  • 잔액 조회 해 주세요 (janaek johoe hae juseyo) — "I'd like to check my balance"

My Advice After 12 Years of Banking in Korea

Open an account at 하나은행 (Hana Bank) for reliability and English service, then install 토스 (Toss) for daily use. This combination covers 99% of your financial needs in Korea.

And a practical tip: always keep your 통장 (tongjang) in a safe place. Even if you no longer use it, it may be required for certain administrative procedures.
