<h2>"While": Two Structures, Two Logics</h2>
<p>In English, "while" covers pretty much everything. "While I eat, I watch TV." "While you sleep, I work." In Korean, you need to choose between two structures based on one specific criterion: <strong>is the subject the same in both parts of the sentence?</strong></p>
<p>This is the kind of nuance that took me months to internalize after arriving in Seoul 12 years ago. Today, it's second nature — and it will become natural for you too.</p>
<h2>Structure 1: -는 동안 (During / While)</h2>
<p><strong>동안</strong> (dongan) means "during" or "while." Combined with -는, it's used when the <strong>subjects can be different</strong>:</p>
<table>
<tr><th>Korean</th><th>Romanization</th><th>Meaning</th></tr>
<tr><td>자는 동안</td><td>janeun dongan</td><td>while (someone) sleeps</td></tr>
<tr><td>기다리는 동안</td><td>gidarineun dongan</td><td>while (someone) waits</td></tr>
<tr><td>일하는 동안</td><td>ilhaneun dongan</td><td>while (someone) works</td></tr>
<tr><td>수업하는 동안</td><td>sueophaneun dongan</td><td>during class</td></tr>
</table>
<h3>Examples</h3>
<ul>
(jega janeun dongan biga wasseoyo) — While I was sleeping, it rained.</li>
(eommaga yorihaneun dongan aineun TV-reul bwayo) — While mom cooks, the child watches TV.</li>
(gidarineun dongan chaek-eul ilgeosseoyo) — While waiting, I read a book.</li>
(hanguge inneun dongan mani baewosseoyo) — While I was in Korea, I learned a lot.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Structure 2: -(으)면서 (At the Same Time / Simultaneously)</h2>
<p><strong>-(으)면서</strong> (-myeonseo) is used when the <strong>same subject</strong> does two things at the same time:</p>
<table>
<tr><th>Verb</th><th>+ -(으)면서</th><th>Meaning</th></tr>
<tr><td>먹다 (meokda)</td><td>먹으면서 (meogeumyeonseo)</td><td>while eating</td></tr>
<tr><td>듣다 (deutda)</td><td>들으면서 (deurenmyeonseo)</td><td>while listening</td></tr>
<tr><td>[걷다](/en/dictionary/%EA%B1%B7%EB%8B%A4) (geotda)</td><td>걸으면서 (georenmyeonseo)</td><td>while walking</td></tr>
<tr><td>웃다 (utda)</td><td>웃으면서 (useumyeonseo)</td><td>while laughing</td></tr>
<tr><td>보다 (boda)</td><td>보면서 (bomyeonseo)</td><td>while watching</td></tr>
</table>
<h3>Examples</h3>
<ul>
(eumageul deurenmyeonseo gongbuhaeyo) — I study while listening to music.</li>
(keopireul masimyeonseo iyagihaeyo) — We chat while drinking coffee.</li>
(babeul meogeumyeonseo TV-reul bwayo) — I watch TV while eating.</li>
(useumyeonseo malhaesseoyo) — He spoke while laughing.</li>
(georenmyeonseo jeonhwahaesseoyo) — I called while walking.</li>
</ul>
<h2>THE Key Rule</h2>
<table>
<tr><th></th><th>-는 동안</th><th>-(으)면서</th></tr>
<tr><td>Same subject</td><td>✅ OK</td><td>✅ OK</td></tr>
<tr><td>Different subjects</td><td>✅ OK</td><td>❌ NOT ALLOWED</td></tr>
<tr><td>Simultaneous actions</td><td>✅</td><td>✅</td></tr>
<tr><td>Duration nuance</td><td>✅ Emphasizes duration</td><td>Emphasizes simultaneity</td></tr>
</table>
<h3>Comparison</h3>
<ul>
(I study while listening to music.) → Same subject → OK</li>
(During the time I listen to music, I study.) → Same subject → Also OK</li>
(While mom cooks, the child plays.) → Different subjects → OK with 동안</li>
→ Different subjects → NOT ALLOWED with -면서</li>
</ul>
<h2>Extra Nuance: -면서 for Contradiction</h2>
<p>-(으)면서 can also express contradiction ("even though / yet"):</p>
<ul>
(almyeonseo moreun cheokaeyo) — He pretends not to know even though he knows.</li>
(doni isseumyeonseo an sayo) — He doesn't buy it even though he has money.</li>
