눈치 is the most important social skill in Korea. After 12 years in Seoul, here's how I learned it (the hard way).

The Korean Word Every Expat Should Know
눈치 (nunchi) roughly translates to "the look" or "social intuition." It's the ability to read the room, understand what people think without them saying it, and adapt accordingly.
What 눈치 Means Concretely
- At work: sensing the boss is in a bad mood → don't ask questions now
- In groups: feeling someone is uncomfortable → change the subject
- At dinner: seeing empty glasses → refill them without being asked
눈치 and the Korean Language
Korean is a language of context: much is left unsaid. A Korean will say "좀 어려울 것 같아요" (seems a bit difficult) instead of "no." With 눈치, you understand it's a refusal.
