Why Google Translate Doesn't Work for Korean (And What to Use Instead)
Google Translate is handy... except for Korean. We explain why and what alternatives to use.

The Fundamental Problem
Google Translate works reasonably well for languages close to English (Spanish, French, German). But for Korean, results are often absurd, incorrect, or incomprehensible.
Why? Because Korean and English are structurally opposite languages.
5 Reasons Why It Doesn't Work
1. Word Order Is Reversed
English follows SVO (Subject-Verb-Object):
"I eat an apple"
Korean follows SOV (Subject-Object-Verb):
"나는 사과를 먹어요" (I apple eat)
2. Subjects Are Often Omitted
In Korean, if context is clear, the subject is dropped:
"밥 먹었어?" means "Have you eaten?" but literally it's just "Rice ate?"
3. Politeness Levels
Korean has 7 politeness levels that change verb forms. Google Translate often picks the wrong one.
4. Particles Have No Equivalent
Korean particles (은/는, 이/가, 을/를, etc.) don't exist in English. Google mistranslates or ignores them.
5. Idiomatic Expressions
- "눈이 높다" literally "eyes are high" → actually means "having high standards"
- "발이 넓다" literally "feet are wide" → actually means "knowing many people"
Concrete Examples of Failed Translations
| Korean | Google Translate | Actual meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 밥 먹었어? | Did you eat rice? | How are you? |
| 눈치가 없다 | There is no tact | Lacking social awareness |
| 고생했어 | I've had a hard time | Good job / Well done |
