Living in South Korea as a Frenchman — 12 Years of Experience

2014-2026: 12 Years I Don't Regret

I arrived in Seoul in 2014 with a backpack and no plan. Today, I still live here.

What I Love

  • Safety: Seoul is one of the safest cities in the world
  • Food: Incredible variety, ~$8-12 for a full meal
  • Efficiency: Ultra-fast internet, 1-hour delivery
  • Transport: Clean metro, $1.50 per ride

What's Hard

  • Language barrier (first 2 years)
  • Social pressure: Korean society is demanding
  • Air quality: Fine dust is a real problem in spring
  • Distance from family: 12h flight from home

My Advice

  1. Learn Korean BEFORE coming
  2. Budget for 6 months
  3. Get out of the expat bubble
  4. Prepare for loneliness the first months
