How to Say Delicious in Korean: 맛있어요 (Masisseoyo)

"It's delicious" in Korean is 맛있어요 (masisseoyo). Pronounce it "ma-shi-sseo-yo." This is the #1 food reaction you'll need in any Korean restaurant.

Food in Korea Is Sacred

If you go to Korea, you'll eat. A lot. All the time. And Koreans will ask you if it's good. Constantly. "맛있어요?" (masisseoyo? — is it good?) is probably the question I've heard most in 12 years living in Seoul. And nodding with a smile isn't enough — you need to know how to respond!

After 12 years of bibimbap, kimchi jjigae, and samgyeopsal shared with Korean friends, here's my complete guide to food reactions in Korean. These 10 expressions will transform you from "silent tourist" to "appreciated dining companion."

Expression #1: 맛있어요 — It's Delicious

The king of expressions, the culinary Holy Grail:

  • 맛있어요 (masisseoyo) — It's delicious / It's good

Breakdown:

  • 맛 (mat) — taste
  • 있어요 (isseoyo) — there is / exists

Literally: "The taste exists" → It's good. The opposite is equally logical: 맛없어요 (madeopseoyo) means "the taste doesn't exist" → it's not good.

Enthusiasm Levels

미쳤어요, 이거!michyeosseoyo, igeo!This is insane!Slang — between friends
죽인다!juginda!It's killer!Slang — extreme

My favorite: 너무 맛있어요! (neomu masisseoyo — it's so good). It's the sweet spot between enthusiastic and natural.

Cultural Tip: The Ajumma Reaction

When a Korean ajumma (아줌마) serves you food — whether it's your mother-in-law, the owner of the neighborhood restaurant, or your colleague — and you say 맛있어요 with a big smile, something magical happens. Her face lights up. She gives you another scoop. Then another. It's the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Expression #2: 맛없어요 — It's Not Good

The opposite, to use with extreme caution:

  • 맛없어요 (madeopseoyo) — It's not good / not tasty

⚠️ Warning: NEVER say this directly to someone who cooked for you. It's offensive. If you don't like it, say instead:

  • 저는 이거 좀 안 맞아요 (jeoneun igeo jom an majayo) — It's not really my thing
  • 괜찮아요 (gwaenchanayo) — It's alright (neutral, no enthusiasm)

Expression #3: 매워요 — It's Spicy

Welcome to Korea, land of chili:

  • 매워요 (maewoyo) — It's spicy / hot

Chili pepper (고추 — gochu) is everywhere in Korean cuisine. Kimchi, tteokbokki, buldak... Even after 12 years, some dishes still make me cry.

Spiciness Levels

KoreanRomanisationTranslation
조금 매워요jogeum maewoyoIt's a little spicy
매워요maewoyoIt's spicy
너무 매워요!neomu maewoyo!It's too spicy!
입에 불이 나요!ibe buri nayo!My mouth is on fire!

The phrase "덜 맵게 해 주세요" (deol maepge hae juseyo — make it less spicy please) can save your life at a restaurant.

Personal Anecdote

My first time with 불닭볶음면 (buldak bokkeum myeon — fire chicken noodles), I thought I was going to die. My face was red as a tomato, tears were streaming down, and my Korean friends were laughing so hard they nearly fell off their chairs. Since then, I've learned to always ask about the spice level before ordering.

Expression #4: 짜요 — It's Salty

  • 짜요 (jjayo) — It's salty

Korean food can be very salty: jjigae (찌개 — stews), ganjang (간장 — soy sauce), doenjang (된장 — fermented soybean paste)...

  • 좀 짜요 (jom jjayo) — It's a bit salty
  • 너무 짜요 (neomu jjayo) — It's too salty

Expression #5: 달아요 — It's Sweet

  • 달아요 (darayo) — It's sweet

Korea loves sweet things. Cafés serve drinks with astronomical amounts of sugar. Korean desserts (bingsu, hotteok, bungeoppang) are a world to discover.

  • 달콤해요 (dalkomhaeyo) — It's pleasantly sweet

Expression #6: 싱거워요 — It's Bland

  • 싱거워요 (singeowoyo) — It's bland / lacks flavor

Use carefully. If it's bland, you can also politely ask:

  • 소금 좀 주세요 (sogeum jom juseyo) — Can I have some salt please?

Expression #7: 시원해요 — It's Refreshing

A uniquely Korean concept:

  • 시원해요 (siwonhaeyo) — It's refreshing / it hits the spot

Koreans say 시원해요 for hot soups too! Yes, a boiling broth can be 시원해요. The word describes the internal satisfaction, not the temperature. Drinking a good 국 (guk — soup) when it's cold outside = 시원해요.

Expression #8: 고소해요 — It's Nutty/Savory

  • 고소해요 (gosohaeyo) — It's savory (with a nutty/toasted taste)

There's no perfect translation in English. It's the taste of roasted sesame, sesame oil, nuts, butter... Koreans use this word constantly. After a few months in Korea, you'll instinctively understand what it means.

Expression #9: 배불러요 — I'm Full

  • 배불러요 (baebulleoyo) — I'm full / stuffed

Essential because in Korea, hosts never stop serving you. If you don't say 배불러요, your plate will be eternally refilled.

  • 많이 먹었어요 (mani meogeosseoyo) — I ate a lot
  • 잘 먹었습니다 (jal meogeosseumnida) — I ate well (thank you phrase after a meal)

The Cultural Code of 잘 먹었습니다

잘 먹었습니다 is THE expression to know at restaurants. It's the equivalent of "that was lovely, thank you." Say it when leaving and watch the restaurant owner's face light up. It's simple, polite, and shows you respect the culture.

Expression #10: 한 입만 — Just One Bite

  • 한 입만 (han ibman) — Just one bite

In Korea, you share EVERYTHING. If a friend is eating something good, saying 한 입만 is perfectly normal. It's even expected.

  • 한 입만 줘봐 (han ibman jwobwa) — Give me just one bite (between friends)
  • 좀 맛볼 수 있어요? (jom matbol su isseoyo?) — Can I taste a bit? (polite)
