<h2>Sequencing Actions in Time</h2>
<p>"Before sleeping, I brush my teeth." "After eating, I do the dishes." Structuring a sequence of actions is the foundation of any conversation. In Korean, two structures handle this — and they're remarkably logical.</p>
<p>After 12 years in Seoul, these are structures I literally use every day. They're simple, regular, and once learned, you never forget them.</p>
<h2>"Before Doing": -기 전에</h2>
<p>The structure is always the same:</p>
<p><strong>Verb stem + -기 전에</strong> (gi jeone)</p>
<p>전 (jeon) means "before" and 에 is the time particle.</p>
<table>
<tr><th>Verb</th><th>+ -기 전에</th><th>Meaning</th></tr>
<tr><td>자다 (jada)</td><td>자기 전에 (jagi jeone)</td><td>before sleeping</td></tr>
<tr><td>먹다 (meokda)</td><td>먹기 전에 (meokgi jeone)</td><td>before eating</td></tr>
<tr><td>[가다](/en/dictionary/%EA%B0%80%EB%8B%A4) (gada)</td><td>가기 전에 (gagi jeone)</td><td>before going</td></tr>
<tr><td>시작하다 (sijakada)</td><td>시작하기 전에 (sijakagi jeone)</td><td>before starting</td></tr>
<tr><td>만나다 (mannada)</td><td>만나기 전에 (mannagi jeone)</td><td>before meeting</td></tr>
</table>

<h2>"After Doing": -(으)ㄴ 후에 / -(으)ㄴ 다음에</h2>
<p>Two nearly interchangeable forms:</p>
<p><strong>Verb stem + -(으)ㄴ 후에</strong> (hue) — after</p>
<p><strong>Verb stem + -(으)ㄴ 다음에</strong> (daeume) — next / after</p>
<table>
<tr><th>Verb</th><th>+ -(으)ㄴ 후에</th><th>+ -(으)ㄴ 다음에</th><th>Meaning</th></tr>
<tr><td>먹다 (meokda)</td><td>먹은 후에 (meogeun hue)</td><td>먹은 다음에 (meogeun daeume)</td><td>after eating</td></tr>
